You might not have heard about this event, the inaugural US Open Cycling Championships, but it is a US ProTour event and it will be broadcast nationally on NBC this Saturday. I've posted the route map, course details, teams and spectator viewing information

Before his big NRC stage race win at the Central Valley Classic this past weekend, I recorded a video interview with Ben Jacques-Maynes. UCI Continental ("division 3") guys don't get mentioned often in this forum but Ben is as professional as any guy out there and maybe more so. He showed what a quality bike racer is on and off the bike at the Tour of California.

At the beginning of this year, I posted four cycling Hawaii reports. This, the last report, was half finished by the time May rolled around so I decided to wait and finish it after the summer since nobody wants to read about Hawaii in the summer, right? It's more relevant now people with thinking about winter vacations and the upcoming Hawaii Ford Ironman World Championship that takes place on Saturday October 21st. Part the route I describe in this report follows the same bike course used for the 112 mile out and back along the Kona-Kohala Coast. A 10 minute recap of the 2006 Sea Otter Classic Mens Pro Circuit Race consisting of pre-race rider introductions, race video and photos from around the course especially on the climb and "cork screw" descent, finish line photos and post-race interviews with Matty Rice (the race winner) and Levi Leipheimer. Over 700 photos and videos have been post from last weekend's bike festival.

All eight days are now documented and the timelines have been adjusted to account for differences in camera times. All stages have been recently updated. Some obversations: There are a lot of good "amateur" photographers out there! Someone even submitted photos from their airplane along Big Sur. * It's very cool seeing a moment in time captured by sometimes 3 or 4 different people from different angles. * More video than expected was submitted. (Tip: you can find only the video clips by deselecting 'photos' in the storyboard filter and then clicking 'Create Gallery') * This citizen journalism project was a topic of conversation at the event among the top organizers, the pros, the press and other photographers. I got a lot of big grins from the pros but the organizers see it as a threat to their television rights and I may have trouble getting media credentials again. * As my wife said, "it's better to be controversial than boring!"

Photos and movies from cycling the mightly volcanoes, desert and lush rain forest of the national park at the south end of the Big Island. This RSS item is also our first with an enclosure - a five minute video capturing the best attractions of the park.

Cycling the north side of the Big Island through pasture land and rain forests with the coast on one side and a massive volcano on the other until reaching the spectacular Waipio Valley.

Just prior to Christmas, I spent one week on the Big Island with my in-laws during a mostly family trip. I managed to cycle every day!
