Tomorrow is the end of the Bike Monkey's Cyclocross series in Santa Rosa:
Cyclocross Santa Rosa 2010 is coming to a close on Valentines Day weekend. February 13th, and at Doyle Park near downtown Santa Rosa to be exact. This year we switched up the format a bit, starting the A’s a little earlier than normal. That’s gone quite well, and now we’re coming to a close. To celebrate another fun season of friendly, muddy cross racing we’re offering up “Ladies Day”. That’s right. Women race for free at our next cross race. There’s nothing special do to except show up and convince us you’re a lady, then sign a waiver. We don’t ask for much.
Racing starts at 9am (but goes throughout the day) in Doyle Park. Full details at Bike Monkey website.

Adding NorCal MTB Races To Your Calendar Feb 11, 2010 View URL

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Several people have asked me over the past few weeks about how they can get the NorCal MTB Racing calendar (the list of races that appear over in the sidebar) into their
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Apple iCal
  • Google Calendar
This has been around for several years (since I started MTBcalendar.com to hold the calendar info), but I don't think I've ever gotten around to actually documenting it.

Apple iCal
  1. Click this link
  2. Once you click the link, iCal will open and ask you to subscribe to the feed. Click Ok.

Google Calendar
  1. Copy this URL to your clipboard: http://mtbcalendar.dev/calendar/tags/norcal.ics
  2. Go to Google Calendar and click on the “Add” dropdown button in the "Other Calendars" section on the left-hand side.
  3. Choose "Add by URL".
  4. On the next screen, paste the URL in the "public calendar address" field.
  5. Click "OK"
  6. You can change the calendars name by clicking on triangle next to it's name and then choosing "settings."

Microsoft Outlook 2007
  1. Select "Tools", then "Account Settings" in your Outlook 2007 Calendar menu.
  2. Select "Internet Calendars" and click "New".
  3. Paste this URL in the location field: http://mtbcalendar.dev/calendar/tags/norcal.ics
  4. Set up the display name for your calendar and/or add a description in "Subscription Options".

You can use these same instructions, but with different URLs, to get other calendars. For example, a calendar for the whole state of California races is http://www.mtbcalendar.com/calendar/state/CA.ics or just SoCal is http://mtbcalendar.dev/calendar/tags/socal.ics. Any state, country or tag on MTBcalendar.com can give you RSS, iCal or HTML feeds.

Let me know in the comments if you have any questions (but no, I am not your help desk support). And thanks to Matt and vuduvgn for the push on this.

UPDATE (2/12/10): As a few people are having problems with adding this to Google Calendar, I did a walk-thru video. Watch it here.

SB Racing #1 Postponed (Again) Feb 10, 2010 View URL

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

It's a bad news, good news situation with the new SB Racing Winter XC series:
Santa Teresa on 2/12/10 is now on May 8, 2010.
Please note that Round 1 will now be held May 8th as a later event in the series.

As much as we love a good mud run, we are at the mercy of the facility we are using and right now the rangers at Santa Teresa don't want their park to get hammered by us any further than Mother Nature already has. Probably understandable. As such, we are shooting for May flowers and hopefully Spring sunshine and prime racing conditions on May 8th.

Just like previously, entries to the current event are still transferable to any race in the series and we are again, very apologetic and very appreciative of your patience and understanding with the uncharacteristically wet weather.

Upcoming Events
2/20/10 Harvey Bear Ranch
3/6/10 Fort Ord
3/27/10 Henry Coe Fundraiser
4/3/10 Santa Teresa
5/8/10 Santa Teresa
Summer/Fall Series to Follow
So to recap: SB Racing series pushed back due to weather, but there may be a Summer/Fall series.

CCCX Fall DH Finale Preview Jan 29, 2010 View URL

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

This weekend is the finale of the CCCX Fall Downhill series and here's a preview:
After some steady rains the dirt at Toro Park is in the perfect condition for trail maintenance and construction. The CCCX Crew has been hitting the digging pretty hard the past week and now the final race course of the 2009-10 Winter Series is dialed in fully. The course is going to be very similar to race #1. Speeds will be super fast right out of the start. The top roller coaster fire road section has been cleaned and re-built for ultimate numbers to be reached on riders speedometer's. The start section of trail is like a freeway, mixed in with gravity filled roller coaster dips that make a rider feel as if they are on some type of Olympic style Ski run where tucking and aerodynamics bring out extra M.P.H. for the racers. The race route then dips into a new cut section of trail with some air opportunity for the jumpers and some berm chances for riders who can ride a rail to maintain speed. More single-track switch back sections are to follow, before the trail flows into the finishing area. This course has the highest speed average of all the Toro DH trails, and the dirt traction is the best it has been all year. The racing is going to be top notch, and the entire trail will be ripping. Division Champions will be crowned at the end of the day.
The CCCX race is held at Toro Park between Monterey and Salinas, California on Sunday.

NEW ROUND 1 DATE: Saturday, FEBRUARY 13th. Mark it down...See you there!

We have confirmation from the rangers that we can officially reschedule this weekend's opening round event for Saturday, February 13th. SB Racing Winter #1 Decision Tomorrow Jan 27, 2010 View URL

Due to the heavy rains across NorCal the past few weeks, the first round of the SB Racing Winter Series may be moved:
Faithful following,
An official decision for the first round event at Santa Teresa this weekend will be forthcoming tomorrow (Wednesday). We realize that El Nino doesn't want to be left off the starting line and would also like to participate in our events. However, our primary concern is cooperating with the parks department and promoting the best possible event for our racers! Check back tomorrow for the official announcement. Thank you for your patience. -SBRacing.org

Whistler Bike Park For Sale Jan 24, 2010 View URL

Interesting news about Whistler's Bike Park (with a slight NorCal angle):
Whistler Mountain Bike Park in Canada, site of the Kokanee Crankworx and Red Bull Exodus, is being put on the auction block on February 19.  Intrawest ULC, owners of the Whistler and Blackcomb mountain resorts, are reported to have missed payments on a $1.4 billion (yes, with a ‘B’) loan last month.

The lenders, which include Lehman Brothers and Davidson Kempner, hope for a speedy sale of Intrawest  in one transaction.  The assets include more than a dozen resort properties, including Mont Tremblant in Quebec, Steamboat and Winter Park in Colorado and Squaw Valley in California.

Updated Mac Dashboard Widget (v1.1.1) Jan 18, 2010 View URL

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

As many of you have noticed, the race calendar on the right sidebar now shows race types (cross country, downhill, etc) in the parentheses instead of state (CA ... duh). Less of you probably noticed that this change completely fubar'd the old Mac Dashboard widget. For those of you not in the know, this Dashboard widget allows you to see all the upcoming races in NorCal (or any other region in the United States) at your fingertips by simply touching F12 on you Mac. It looks a little something like this:
It's isn't difficult to use, as you can see with this short walk through:
You can download (or upgrade) the MTBcalendar dashboard widget from http://slashk.github.com/mtb-calendar-widget/. You can also get a link to the source code there.

Thanks to Juan for getting me off my ass to finally change this.

Downieville Registration Opens February Jan 15, 2010 View URL

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Downieville registration will open on 2/19/2010 at 8pm PDT:
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING 2010 EVENT!!!!!
After some mental hardship and several lengthy meetings with Downieville residents, local business owners, County Planners, wildlife biologists, hydrologists, Forest Service Rangers and Congressional Representatives (that's right, we said Federal Representatives, because this race is damned important to our Country) the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship has secured a special-use permit to operate the Downieville Classic in both 2010 and 2011.

In observance of this magnificent achievement, we would like to announce that Santa Cruz Bicycles is back as title sponsor of the event. Mike Ferrentino, Santa Cruz Bicycles marketing guru declares, "We are equal parts proud and honored to be returning to the Downieville Classic as title sponsor. Our relationship with this event goes all the way back to it's roots, not long after we started out as a company. Our employees come to Downieville on vacation, or engineers come here to test bikes and ideas, and we consider this to be our "home" race."

While we're making announcements, we would also like to make known that registration for the Cross Country and All-Mountain races will open February 19th at 8:00pm. Right here, using www.active.com.

Yes, we will have reminders that week so you don't miss out.

The drama continues with the 2010 Pro XCT series ...
Just when the US Pro XCT calendar seemed to be finalized, the six-race national-level series shrunk to a five-race series on Wednesday. The Bump 'n' Grind, in Birmingham, Alabama, which was to be round four on June 5, decided not to pursue UCI categorization, and because all US Pro XCT series events must be UCI-sanctioned, the race will no longer be part of the Pro XCT series in 2010.

Boggs V Dates Dec 21, 2009 View URL

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Help out the folks at BikeMonkey plan this year's Boggs V date:
What we’re struggling with right now is the date! We have two options, and rather than assume, we’d like to know what you all feel about them.

So if you’re a future Boggs V participant and you had your choice, on the table are:
  • April 3rd (Easter weekend) — our first choice
  • March 27th (NOT Easter weekend) — our second choice
Keep in mind that April 3rd is 1 week before the Napa Valley Dirt Classic. We don’t want to impose on such a long-standing event so we stayed away from April 10th out of respect for the race that gave me my first introduction and serious beat-down to mountain bike racing back in the day.

US Cup Re-announced 2010 Dates Dec 18, 2009 View URL

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

A little more clarity on the 2010 US Cup schedule:
The US Cup is pleased to announce the 2010 dates for its inaugural Triple Crown All Mountain Series.

The opening round of the US Cup Triple Crown All Mountain Series will be held at Bonelli Park on March 13-14.  The second round will incorporate the Mountain States Cup series at Chalk Creek Stampede May 15-16 and the final has been awarded to Massanutten resort on June 19-20th.  This concept embraces all parts of the country and we hope the racers will be excited to see a US Cup triple crown come to their home town race.

“The Triple Crown All Mountain series will test the rider’s ability in multiple disciplines to declare the Triple Crown All Mountain winner.  We have decided to make this series more appealing to the riders, sponsors and media by incorporating Cross Country, Super D and Short Track into the series concept," continues Kady.  “A rider’s best 2 of 3 events will be calculated to crown a winner at each race and ultimately the overall series Champion.”

In addition the US Cup will continue with its network of Kenda Cup’s, that act as local and regional qualifiers. The Kenda Cup’s feature over 15 locations across the US, from Ashland Oregon to French Lick Indiana. The US Cup Invitational shootout will be on September 11-12, The US Cup will also manage a high level west coast based series that incorporates the Triple Crown opener, Pro XCT race and other California favorite venues.

Look for more details on Triple Crown scheduled payout and presenting and naming sponsors of this inaugural event as well as updates to our ever growing Kenda Cup qualifiers.

2009 Red Hills Rumble Dec 15, 2009 View URL

I don't know any more about this race than what I've read on MTBR and their website, but it sounds interesting:
The Trogs are hosting an MTB TT and Food Drive on December 20th at Red Hills Rec Area (ed: South of Sonora). It'll be cold, maybe wet, definitely brutal. Red Hills is a favorite winter riding and this winter we're going to combine a fun day on the bikes with a food drive.

USAC chooses Colorado ... blah, blah, blah ... Colorado ... blah, blah:
USA Cycling confirmed that the 2010 Mountain Bike National Championships, scheduled for the weekend of July 15-18, will return to Sol Vista in Granby, Colorado. When 2010 the US National Championship calendar was released in recent weeks, USAC had confirmed only that the mountain bike nationals would be somewhere in Colorado, with no certainty that they would return to Granby.

CCCX DH #4 Preview Dec 12, 2009 View URL

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Tomorrow is the first MTB race of the new decade:
Trail traction is optimal currently at Toro Park. Recent rains have made the traction sweet and the forecast is set for a clear weekend of racing action. A course similar to race #2 of the Fall/Winter Series will be used for race #4. Please have a look at the photos from race #2. Berms and additional jumps have been added to the new trail created for the CCCX DH races. The course is going to be railing and very high speed for race #4, as the trails at Toro Park keep getting better and better. This time of the year trail work is being done on a regular basis to the Downhill routes in Toro Park. The berm turns have been built up and new additions to the trail have been added. Course #4 is going to be good!
