Cycling in Literature:  Ernest Hemingway mentioned the Tour of the Basque Country
in his first major novel, "The Sun Also Rises" (1926).  In the story, which
takes place in Paris, San Sebastian and Pamplona, Hemingway wrote,

"There was a bicycle-race on, the Tour du Pays Basque,
and the riders were stopping that night in San Sebastian.
In the dining-room, at one side, there was a long table
of bicycle-riders, eating with their trainers and managers.
They were all French and Belgians, and paid close attention
to their meal, but they were having a good time.....
The next morning at five o'clock the race resumed with
the last lap, San Sebastian-Bilbao.  The bicycle-riders drank
much wine and were burned and browned by the sun.
They did not take the race seriously except among themselves."

In a subsequent paragraph, the novel's main character and narrator talks about having coffee
with the team manager of one of the big bicycle manufacturers:

"Bicycle road-racing was the only sport in the world, he said.
Had I ever followed the Tour de France?  Only in the papers.
The Tour de France was the greatest sporting event in the world.
Following and organizing the road races had made him know France."

Hemingway wrote the first draft of the novel on the terrace of a left bank Paris cafe,
La Closerie des Lilas.  The photo above shows the Ile Saint-Louis, a natural island
on the Seine river, seen from the left bank.  I waited for a Parisian tourist riverboat
to pass, providing background illumination for the shot.  In the mid 1990s, French officials dedicated
an Ernest Hemingway street in Paris.  There is also an Ernest Hemingway High School in Nimes,
in the south of France, which can be seen from trains to and from Montpellier.
For those of you who read "The Sun Also Rises" in high school, how many
of you remember mention of the Tour of the Basque Country or cycling at all?

- LIVE here.  The race is LIVE here too but comes with annoying pop-up ads...

- Here in France, this race is known as the Grand Prix de l'Escaut.  French TV channel Sport+ is showing the race live from 15:45.  Indeed, they are favoring this race over today's stage of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco which will follow, delayed.  Understandable given the impressive Scheldeprijs start list ahead of Sunday's Paris-Roubaix:  Boonen, Devolder, Cancellara, Flecha, Hincapie, Farrar et al are all here.  And Alessandro Petacchi is back to defend his 2009 victory.

- Scheldeprijs live video streaming on Sporza is scheduled to begin at around 15:20 CET (9:20am U.S. Eastern) with Michel Wuyts and Tom Steels commentating.  We will of course look for alternative feeds.

The 2010 Circuit Cycliste Sarthe (or Circuit de la Sarthe) starts Tuesday and runs through Friday, April 9.  We've covered this race for years now and there still is no live television coverage, even in France.  There once again is a live ticker, however, and we should have video clips after each stage.

This year marks the return of Lance Armstrong to Sarthe where he last competed in 2003.  Armstrong needs more race miles in his legs but Sarthe also has an Individual Time Trial, an opportunity that is always of interest to Tour contenders.  Also expected on the start line:  Machado, Popovych, Rubiera, Voeckler, Fedrigo, Vaugrenard, Moreau, Sanchez L.L., Gutierrez, Dumoulin, Florencio, Gustov, Haddou, Moos, King, Bookwalter, Louder, ...

We'll have the available Circuit Cycliste Sarthe live tickers and daily video clips in our Live Coverage Guide in the morning, updated during the race.  Note that Stage 1 is expected to finish between 15:41 and 16:06 CET (9:41am and 10:06am U.S. Eastern).

Stage 1 starts at:  11:15 CET (5:15am U.S. Eastern)

2003 Circuit Cycliste Sarthe:  The peloton arrives in Angers for the finish of the Day 2 morning stage.  After a lunch hour break, riders compete in a short Individual Time Trial, also in Angers.  It's a formula that is popular with cycling fans and the inclusion of the time trial makes the event attractive for Tour contenders, who have relatively few in-competition time trials before July.
