Tyneside Bike Ride (Charity fundraiser - Mar 22, 2010 View URL

Image
5 miles, 23 miles or 44 miles Whether you ride with friends, family, a group from the office or on your own, the Tyneside Bike Ride is a great day out and for a great cause. All routes start and finish near Tynemouth Priory and then follow cycle paths and parkland for 5, 23 or 44 miles. The 23 mile route takes you to the heart of Newcastle and the breathtaking Millennium Bridge before circling back to the coast. New for 2010 is the 44 mile route that continues along through countryside to Wylam before returning to Tynemouth. After the ride participants and their supporters are invited to join us at the start/finish for music and refreshments. All participants will receive a route map, t-shirt and medal. You will also receive a fundraising pack to help you reach the GBP50 minimum sponsorship (GBP120 for a family of up to 5).

Bartali, the Iron Man - U.S. Premiere

Bartali, the Iron Man (Gino Bartali - L'intramontabile, Italy, 2006) will premiere in the U.S. on Eurochannel Monday, March 22, 2010 at 9 PM (Eastern Time) and 10 PM (Pacific Time).

Cycling great Gino Bartali won the Tour de France in 1938 and 1948.  He also won the Giro d'Italia three times.  And...his palmares includes four victories in Milan-San Remo.

Eurochannel has asked cyclingfans.com to help promote the U.S. premiere of this two-part mini-series about Bartali.  This was also the perfect opportunity to launch the new Cyclingfans.com Channel on Youtube.

For more information and to view the film's trailer, check out the new Cyclingfans.com Channel on YouTube.

Bath2Brecon 80 Mile Challenge (Charity f Mar 13, 2010 View URL

Image
From the historic Georgian city of Bath to Brecon in the heart of Wales hosted by Ride Your Bike Cycle Challenges. This is the second year of this event after it's very successful inauguration in 2009 raising over GBP12 000 for local charities. This year the aim is to raise even more money and with the backing of Bath Rugby the event will be leaving from The Rec on the 19th June. The route passes through Bath then along the cycle paths to the north of Bristol into the Gloucestershire countryside before reaching the old Severn Bridge. From there it passes along the Usk valley around Abergavenny before entering Brecon via the Victorian canal path. This ride is mainly on quiet country lanes and cycle paths and is one of the premier cycle events of 2010, if you don't believe us check out the pictures from last years event on the website www.cyclechallenges.co.uk . There is a registration fee of GBP25 and you need to raise a minimum of GBP150 for a local charity: Positive Action on Cancer. As preparation for the event you will get a briefing evening, a twelve week training schedule and all your food and drink during the ride. On the day of the ride there will be comprehensive backup in the form of support vehicles, route signage and maps and then an organized coach trip back to Bath for you and your bike after the celebratory meal in Brecon. If this sounds like the event for you, visit www.cyclechallenges.co.uk and then click on the "Get Involved" section to download your application form."

Tonya's Challenge (Charity fundraiser - Mar 09, 2010 View URL

Image
The first 'Tonya's Bike Ride' took place in 2000. The Southwell Care Project had just been set up by a small group of parents concerned about the future for their children with learning disabilities when they, the parents, were no longer able to look after them. With no provision in the community, parents were concerned that their children would have to move away from the area. With very little in the way of funds, one of the Project's clients, Tonya Hinds decided that she and her grandmother, Beryl, would have to do something about it. Together they set up a bike ride in the hope of raising GBP100. With about 30 riders they raised GBP1,000 and the die had been cast for an ongoing event. Since than there have been 5 bike rides each attracting about 30 riders and all raising up to GBP2,000 for the Project. Now in 2007, due to her health, Tonya is unable to ride her bike and Beryl, not as young as she once was, feels she cannot organise another. Enter Anna Joyce. Anna had, in 1995, founded the 'Viking Challenge', a 30 mile off-road bike ride in the Vale of Belvoir. This event grew quickly and still, 13 years later, attracts over 1,000 hardy participants each year. Anna now lives in Southwell and when The Care Project approached her with a view to continuing and expanding Tonya's Bike Ride she felt that, with their enthusiastic team already in place, she could contribute her experience and help to create an equally exciting complementary event in this area earlier in the year. And so the new Tonya's was born in 2008. With over 500 entrants in its second year the challenge is set to become a major addition to the UK off-road scene in the coming years. Shorter distances remain for families and younger riders but the 20 mile and killer 37 mile options are fantastic. routes have been designed by local mountain bike enthusiast Simon Carr who has an immense knowledge of trails around Nottinghamshire, many of them a closely guarded secret. The trails are, in parts, visually stunning and, although challenging, fast times are definitely achievable in the right conditions.
