Details of the 2011 event
Once again Club La Santa are happy to welcome you to the Marathon Running Camp. Both marathon and distance running have been increasing in popularity in recent years; this camp gives you the opportunity to sample the challenging terrain of the volcanic island of Lanzarote.
The undulating terrain and sandy trails will be good training for athletes competing in one of the spring or summer marathons now available or any other distance race. It could also be used for those athletes looking for the endurance phase of their training for shorter distance races.
The training
Athletes able to run up to a 4:15 marathon will be catered for and we will have experienced coaches and athletes looking after you. You can see from the programme that we will arrange a variety of runs, one of which will be on the small nearby island of La Graciosa. Additionally, there will be some technical work, track sessions and optional races.
There will also be lectures and at the end of the week, we will have a dinner in the restaurant, La Casa, where companions can join us by paying 26€ for a 3 course meal and a half bottle of wine.
As well as the running we will be offering you some alternative methods of improving your fitness and technique on land and in the pool.
Participants must come prepared for the heat and terrain with good shoes, a hat, sun cream and water bottle carrier. It will be a typical Club La Santa event where you have the chance to meet other athletes from all around the world. The main language spoken will be English.

The island’s dramatic landscape offers a variety of
terrain with some fantastic mountain climbs that makes Lanzarote an ideal place to train; very few riders can achieve the same speed as at home. The well-known hosts, together with the experienced Green Team bike guides offer you plenty of challenges, guidance and many unforgettable experiences whilst you’re biking around Lanzarote. The weeks cater for all abilities from novice to the serious racing club cyclist.
Ideally, to get the most out of your bike weeks, you should be able to cycle 2 to 4 hours daily.
Training
The routes will vary both in length and difficulty, taking you to the far south of the island, through the fascinating Fire Mountains and up to the north with the view over the island La Graciosa. You will challenge yourself and test your legs on the hard climb to Femés and on the 10km long beautiful mountain climb to Tabayesco. We will divide you into groups, which will go at different speeds (from 21 km/h to 30+km/h) and levels, so that there will be a suitable group for everybody. The slowest group is called Herman’s Cappuccino-group and will go 21 to 23 km/h. All the groups will be lead by a host and a guide.
During the long rides there will be stops allowing you to have a sandwich and refreshments.
Before the daily rides there will be advice and guidance given on how to set up your bike correctly and you can always ask the hosts for advice regarding biking in groups, hills/mountains and how to take corners.
It is not unusual for the participants to cover about 950 km and have many unforgettable experiences and challenges. The programme also contains other activities; we will have different lectures with the hosts and a pool tournament on one of the evenings. Every week ends with a dinner in the restaurant La Casa, where different prizes are handed out.
The Team
Rolf Aldag, one of the most famous German bikers, has been biking professionally for 15 years (13 for T-mobile) and has done the Tour de France 10 times winning several stages. In 2000 he was the German road biking champion, and has also won some six-day races. In 2006 Rolf got a new job as the Sports Director for the T-Mobile Team, which is now Team Columbia. Rolf will participate in a part of the bike weeks.
Herman Reichold is a German-Italian artist and is known for his abstract paintings in Germany, Lanzarote and around Europe. Herman has only been biking for around 10 years, but he is a highly respected biker – according to Rolf Aldag. Herman is the
leader of the ”Cappuccino-group” during the bike weeks.
Tom Kristensen, 8 times winner of 24 hours Le Mans (Record) – The most famous motor race in the world. Tom has been driving all kinds of racing cars with great success throughout his career. He is an experienced and all around athlete and he is a good bike rider, both on racing bike and MTB. Besides that he knows all the bike routes on Lanzarote.
Gunnar Asmussen, has been active within the bike sport more than 40 years. He has won several Nordic championships, his main achievement being an Olympic gold medal in 4000 m for teams in Mexico in 1968.
Please note that if you want to rent a Club La Santa bike rather than taking your own, you will have to arrange this separately with CLub La Santa UK prior to departure. The price for a bike is around 95 € per week or 21 € a day. It is advisable to book these bikes at time of booking and are subject to availabilty

| Soleus Injury – Right Leg | Mar 08, 2010 | View URL |
|---|
My marathon training has been going well. On Saturday I had a run-bike brick, and it felt absolutely wonderful. I’ve been studying up on nutrition/diet and at what point to eat what things before, during, and after workouts, and I think it’s making a difference. But of course just when things start going really well, that’s when the injuries come. Here’s what happened this time.
Normally I walk for 1-2 minutes before I start running, mostly because it takes that long for my Garmin to pick up satellites, but also because I like the warm up time. This morning my Garmin connected faster, and I was in a hurry, so I walked perhaps 10 steps before I started running.
As I started out, the back of my lower right leg, just above the Achilles tendon area where it enters my calf, felt a little stiff. Just a tiny, tiny bit. This is not an abnormal feeling for me at first, and it usually goes away after 15-30 seconds of light running. The stiffness went away, but continued feeling tiny, sharp pains even after 15-20 minutes when I was plenty warmed up. It wasn’t enough to impede me from running, but enough that I was noticing it and thought it was a bit abnormal. About 30-35 minutes into my run, I thought maybe I just had a tendon or ligament out of place, and walking might help it get back into place. As it turned out, it hurt more walking than it did running. I tried running again, and that hurt less than walking, but it didn’t feel right, and it wasn’t getting better. I stretched, starting out with a calf stretch but then bending my knee, and that triggered the pain and made it feel worse again, so I stopped it. The pain was not bad at all, but I knew something was going on at this point and that it wasn’t just a matter of getting warmed up or working through it.
I walked-ran back home, and took a short cut. I found that going uphill was the worst. As soon as I got home and cooled down, it stiffened up and has been feeling kind of swollen. Not a lot, and there’s nothing visible, but it’s stiff and thick. If I raise my toe, it doesn’t hurt immediately, but as I get to where I would normally feel a stretch it hurts. Not too bad, but it’s stiff and sore. If I point my toe downwards, so that the tendon gets bunched up, it also hurts (I also noticed when I had shoes on that when I did this the back of my shoe pressed on my tendon and that hurt as well).
To sum up, the pain is not bad, and only hurts when I move. It doesn’t feel like a bad injury, but I do think it’s injured at least slightly.
I called my coach and he diagnosed it as most likely being a lightly strained soleus muscle, rather than my Achilles tendon. He had told me to do calf lift exercises (standing on a small step with my toes and raising my body up with the weight on my toes to strengthen my calves) a few weeks ago, but I forgot to, and he said doing that might have prevented this injury. But before I can start doing that exercise, I need to recover, and that means two things:
1. RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
2. Elipticals. Argh! I like running outside. I do not like doing anything inside that I can do outside. But since my coach recommends not running outside for 7-10 days, I’m replacing my runs with elipticals until I can work outside runs back into the mix. This is the only way I can fully maintain my run fitness and muscles, which I really, really don’t want to lose this close to my first marathon. My coach said he was injured three weeks before a triathlon and trained those last three weeks on an eliptical and ended up doing his best 10K ever in that race, even compared against 10K races that were just 10Ks, not triathlons. I’ve got a 2.5 hour run scheduled for Wednesday that I was really looking forward to proving myself on (it would be my longest run ever) but I guess I’ll be proving whether I can handle an eliptical for that long instead.
| Do you want to swim faster? | Mar 08, 2010 | View URL |
|---|

I love to swim. I’ve been swimming since I was 6 years old and I still swim at least 5 days a week. I come up with my own workouts and swim by myself or with friends who share the same training philosophy as me. I swim much faster now than I swam when I was on a swim team in high-school and in college (over 20 years ago). How is it possible? I trained then just as hard if not harder as I train now, but I just couldn’t improve that much. The answer is technique. In swimming technique is everything. It seems like everyone understands this but only few actually work on improving it, especially triathletes.
Every triathlete or swimmer should ask him or herself how much time do I spend working on my technique? I am sure the answer in most cases would be close to 0. As a contrast, Fred Bousquet, one of the fastest swimmers in the world, spends 75 min a day on technique work. Think about it, 75 min a day doing nothing but drills!
I’ve swum with triathletes before and here is a typical workout that a lot of triathletes do: warmup 300-400, then may be a couple of 50s of kick, drill, swim and then one or more excruciatingly boring sets like 10×200 or 10×400 or even worse 4×1000. Workouts like these will never make anyone swim faster, they might actually make you swim slower and they will definitely wear you out mentally. Sure, your endurance will probably increase and you’ll be able to swim longer BUT you will still swim at same slow speed. If swimming longer, not faster, is your goal, then it’s fine. But if you want to be able to swim faster, here are a couple of things that will help you.
1. Every time you swim work on your technique. Dedicate the first 30 min of every workout to warmup and drills. All drills must be done at a slow pace – don’t rush. Learn about drills as much as you can. There is no one magic drill that will make you faster. You have to think about drills as a progression. Break down the stroke into simple parts and work on each of them, breathing being the most advanced. It will be hard in the beginning because chances are, you don’t have a good balance in the water but if you stick with it, it will get easier. Don’t expect fast results. Wear your snorkel and fins in the beginning. Once you get better, you can take them off. It takes a long time to retrain your neurological pathways. Give yourself at least a year to see results.
2. Throw away your buoy. Triathletes love to swim with buoy because buoy gives you a false sense of buoyancy, it elevates you in the water and it makes you think you swim fast. Get a bend and wrap it around your ankles when you do pull sets. You’ll quickly realize how much harder it is to pull without the buoy. Pulling with bend around your ankles will force you to develop good catch and it will make you stronger.
3. Throw away your paddles. You don’t need paddles, especially the big ones that triathletes like to use. They make your arm turnaround slower and you lose the feel of the water. If you really must wear paddles, get the small ones, not the size of a kick board that I’ve seen some triathletes wear.
4. Swim at the pace you would like to swim in your race – race pace. This is another concept that most people seem to understand but few do anything about it. Figure out your pace per 100 and then swim as much as you can at that pace. For example, if your goal pace is 1:20 per 100 then your 50 pace is 0:40 and your 25 is 0:20. Instead of swimming boring 20 x 100, break the distance and swim it at pace. Here’s one possible set:
4 rounds of broken 100 as:
round 1: 4 x 25
round 2: 25-50-25
round 3: 2 x 50
round 4: 50 + 2 x 25
all 25s on 0:20
all 50s on 0:40
Have enough rest between the rounds to be able to swim the next round at the same pace. If you can’t maintain the pace, increase the interval. If you feel like your technique is falling apart while you are trying to make the interval, slow down and increase the interval. You don’t want to develop bad habits, you probably have enough of them already.
5. Kick, kick and kick. This is probably the opposite of what you’ve been hearing from other triathletes. Most triathletes have this idea that they don’t need to kick hard or kick at all because they need to “save” legs for the bike and the run. It makes no sense. If you don’t kick in swimming, your legs start to sink and they will create a lot of drag. To overcome this drag you’ll have to work harder with your arms and as a result waste more energy. What good do fresh legs give you if you finish the swim half dead? If you work on your kick (and technique) you will become a much more efficient swimmer with stronger legs. What’s wrong with having strong legs? They can only help you on the bike and the run. If you get more efficient in the water because of kicking then you’ll finish the swim with much more energy left and your bike and run times will be faster.
Obviously, there’s much more to swimming than these 5 items, but if you consistently work on these 5 steps, next season your competition will be left behind. Happy training!

In 2002 when he won world, European and national titles. His world championship win in Cancún, Mexico, was Spain’s first gold medal in the event.
In 2003 he came home second at the world championships behind Australia’s Peter Robertson and he had to settle for silver earlier this year as well.
In 2004 in Madeira world champs, Raña came home less than a second behind Kiwi Docherty and at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics, Raña dropped to a disappointing twenty-third place with a time of 1:55:44.27.
He finished fifth at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and in December 2008 he signed a one-year-deal with the professional cycling team Xacobeo-Galicia but he still has the idea ambition to compete in the triatlhon at the London Olympics in 2012.

Most triathlon results are listed by event. You open a file and you search through to find how you placed. If you want to see multiple events. you look at multiple sites and collect the data. I found this frustrating so I created TRIResults.com. It’s the first site that aggregated and matched triathlon results in one place. So, if you click on an athlete’s name in TRIResults.com, you see all of his or her results for all events. The bulk of the results on triresults.com are for Ironman events so it’s not surprising that most of triresults.com visitors are Ironman or aspiring Ironman athletes. I have spent several years collecting, formatting and loading the Ironman results and Ironman Hawaii qualifying times, making TRIResults a pretty unique place, one where triathletes from all over the world go to find their results, to research their competitor’s times, to see what times they need to have in order to qualify for Ironman Hawaii and to get motivated for training.
TRIResults.com has been operating successfully on its own for quite a while. For it to really realize its potential, however, I think it should work in partnership with another triathlon entity and ironman.com just makes sense. I can’t help think that integrating TRIResults.com with the ironman website would be a tremendous benefit to all triathletes. While ironman.com has a lot of historical data on its site, they are hard to access and there is no search functionality. Imagine the benefit if people could go to the ironman website to get all of their pre-Ironman needs met. They could look up qualifying times, view historical results, research their competitors times and interact with fellow athletes at the Ironman social network IAmTri. It makes sense to me.
So, if anyone from the Ironman corporation is reading this and would like to discuss integrating my services to complement your offerings, please send me an email at eduard@triresults.com and I would be happy to talk to you.

The Mentholatum Company puts its eyes on the finish line with Rohto Cooling Eye Drops Sponsorship of select Ironman 70.3 races and Aflac Iron Girl Event Series.
As part of a new marketing direction focused on athletes and people who live active and outdoor lifestyles, The Mentholatum Company (TMC), a leading over-the-counter healthcare products company headquartered in Orchard Park, NY announces its title sponsorship for Ironman® 70.3 Miami.
“The eyes of Ironman 70.3 and Iron Girl athletes are exposed to the sun, water and wind for months while training and racing for the events. This makes Rohto Eye Drops an important part of an athlete’s training regimen and we are happy to have them as part of the Ironman and Iron Girl family”, says Ironman Director of Sponsorship and Licensing Andy Giancola.
“Athletes, in particular swimmers, runners and cyclists, are often faced with dry, irritated eyes because they’re constantly battling environmental or chemical elements”, says Todd Cantrell, director of the eye care and pain management divisions at The Mentholatum Company. “We’ve found that ROHTO Eye Drops are popular among endurance athletes, and the product line has a definite place at these types of events”.
Ironman 70.3 Miami is proud to have Rohto on board as title sponsor.

| 5 reasons triathlons are full of middle- | Jan 04, 2010 | View URL |
|---|
I just read this article, which led me to ask the question; Why are triathlons full of middle-aged people? I was going to ask why triathlons are full of middle-aged, fat people, but I haven’t seen that many fat people in triathlons. Not to say I haven’t seen any–I’ve seen some really fat people in triathlons, even in the half-Ironman I did, and wow, that’s impressive. I mean, it’s impressive that I finished a half-Ironman, but some of these people were even fatter than I was. Some of them were a lot fatter. But there weren’t that many people fatter than I was, so I can’t really say I’ve seen all that many fat people doing triathlons. What I have noticed is that although I’m 34, most of the people I race with seem to be at least 30. Sure, there are young’uns there too, but if I had to guess I’d say 2/3 of racers are 30+. But why?
It’s an easy jab to say it’s just a response to a mid-life crisis. But that doesn’t reveal the underlying reasons behind the mid-life crisis, nor the attending question “Why triathlon?” Why not a new, completely impractical, sports car? Why not a new wardrobe from Banana Republic and a new hairstyle? Why not start listening to your kids’ music? Actually, my oldest is almost two-years old, and I have been listening to more Kindermusik than I care to admit lately, but that’s not in response to a mid-life crisis, I swear. Here are five reasons why triathlon is the response du jour to the mid-life crisis many of us are having these days:
1. We’re fat. We weren’t fat 10 years ago, so doing a triathlon never crossed our minds. I mean, who would have the motivation to start this type of thing if they weren’t in a desperate situation to begin with? We weren’t back then, but we are now, so here we are, spending 10-20 hours per week in response to a condition that snuck up and grabbed us around the waist when we weren’t looking.
2. We’re ready to admit we’re fat. You were probably fat at 30, but it took you until you were 34 to admit it and start doing triathlons. Before that, you were svelt, stocky, husky, strong, burly, or manly (I’m talking to the men here, please don’t get offended womenfolk, you probably have your own set of reasons that are different than ours). Then you finally admitted those were all words designed to disguise the fact that you were fat.
3. We have some money. Actually, I had more money 10 years ago…what’s wrong with this picture?
4. Triathlon is real, and real is the new fake. We’re done with anything Chuck Norris is selling, the latest diet drink, lipo, or any and all of those fad diets. We always knew those things didn’t work. We always knew it was going to be hard work to get in shape, and when we looked around and asked “What’s really, really hard?” someone responded “You should do a triathlon,” and we thought “Yep, that’s what it’s going to take, I guess.” Triathlon replaces all those surgeries, diets, and pills sold on late-night infomercials with something we know will work or kill us in the process, and it only costs three times as much as any of those other things.
5. It works. Somehow signing up for an event, training for it because you’re afraid of what will happen if you don’t, changing your diet because you’re afraid of what will happen to your training if you don’t, doing the event, hesitantly signing up for another, and then doing that and realizing your time is 25% better than your first one leads to an addiction, and the next thing you know you’ve lost 30 lbs. but you see no reason to stop doing triathlons, because you have somehow come to like doing them and all that goes with the training, and you recognize that your life has changed forever, and even all those receipts for $40 containers of drink mix can’t bring you down.
| Ironman Bike Shipping | Jan 04, 2010 | View URL |
|---|
This November (2010) I’ll do my first full Ironman event in Panama City, Florida. I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. That means it’s more than a short drive with my bike on top of the car, so the question is what’s the best way to get my bike to Panama City, and to the venue?
I know there are shipping services, and I know there are airlines that ship bikes as checked luggage, but I’ve never used any of them and would appreciate any recommendations, horror stories, etc. I can use in making some decisions.
One issue I already know I’m going to run into is that I’ll probably arrive several days before the event, and will therefore want access to my bike prior to the event to get in a last ride or two, so having my bike shipped directly to the venue isn’t an option (I guess that also means I’ll need to rent a vehicle I can fit the bike into, since I assume most rental vehicles don’t come with bike racks on top).

Mommy, I hurt my arm.
So the other day I was swimming, freestyle, and everything felt fine. I had swam about 1,000 meters, not as hard as I could, but at a decent clip, perhaps 5-10% harder than normal, and all of a sudden my left arm, on the front, in between my shoulder and elbow, but more towards the shoulder, started to hurt. I finished my lap and stood up in the pool, feeling my arm and stretching it in different directions. I was feeling slight twinges when I moved my arm, but they were very slight and unpredictable. I decided to keep on swimming, but every time I lifted my left arm for the recovery portion of the stroke, I would get a sharp pain in that same area, such that I only made it through three strokes and realized my swimming was over for the day. It’s not that it hurt all that bad, but I could tell that if I kept swimming it was only going to get worse, and that I shouldn’t push it.
I talked to my coach and he told me it’s my deltoid muscle. There are three parts to this muscle and it appears I injured the anterior deltoid muscle, which is the part of your deltoid on the front of your shoulder/arm. The three questions I then asked were; 1) how did this happen, 2) how do I get better, and 3) how do I keep this from happening again?
1. I don’t know how it happened, but my coach said sometimes you can strain the deltoid but it doesn’t start hurting exactly when you hurt it. This seems to make sense, because I don’t know how I could have hurt it swimming. After all, all I’m doing is lifting my arm through the air, so there’s no resistance other than the weight of my arm, and I’ve been swimming for some time and this has never happened before. It seems much more likely to me that I strained it doing something else out of the ordinary, and I think I might know what it was. I think it was due to picking up 45 lb weights in the weight room with my left arm, and using my deltoid to then lift my arm up to lift the weight and re-rack them. Or it could totally be something else, I don’t know. If you have any ideas, let me know.
2. Most of the websites out there specify ice and rest, which is what I’m trying to do, although not very well. That is, I’m not swimming with my arm, but I’m still doing other things, and today I hurt it even worse. How? Toweling off after a shower. Evidently I was a bit vigorous while drying my legs off, because it strained the muscle and now it has been hurting a lot worse all day. I can’t drive anymore, and just about every movement I make hurts. Luckily there’s no swelling and it doesn’t hurt if I don’t use it. Oh, and I haven’t yet iced it once…kind of lazy about that. Hey, I’m busy, you know? But I probably should do that.
3. Strength training, and stretching. Here’s a simple video on how to stretch your anterior deltoid muscles. Here’s a dull but correct video on how to strengthen the anterior deltoid muscle.
| How to Make Green Smoothies Taste Better | Dec 30, 2009 | View URL |

Back around August I started drinking green smoothies. I held up for a little over a month, and then I couldn’t take it anymore. The taste of raw spinach got to me, and I couldn’t look at a green smoothie without feeling a desire to do the technicolor yawn. It wasn’t that the taste of the spinach in the smoothie was all that bad. In fact, you can hardly taste it at all. But just the slight aftertaste of it was all it took to make me sick of them. I gave up for a while, but then I stopped losing weight (I’ve got a good 30-40 lbs of pure fat on me I need to lose), and I didn’t feel as good. I really missed the nutritional value of those green smoothies. I just wish there was some way to put it directly into my stomach without it having to go through my mouth.
I tried peanut butter and other ingredients, but always the taste of spinach was there. But I stumbled onto an absolute cure. One day I poured in a scoop of fruit punch flavored Accelerade, and the spinach taste was gone. I don’t mean that it was just masked or overwhelmed, I mean it was totally, 100%, gone. I could not detect the slightest taste or aftertaste of spinach. My green smoothies went from tasting like…well, a green smoothie, to tasting like something I paid $6 for at Jamba Juice with a fraction of the nutritional value.
I haven’t tried any other drink mix yet, so I don’t know if fruit punch Accelerade is the only thing that will do it, or if Heed’s Subtle Strawberry or Gatorade Lemon-Lime will have the same effect, but at least I’ve found one cure, and maybe there are more out there.

Since August I’ve been swimming in a pair of Zoot jammers. Who started calling these things “jammers”? Didn’t they used to be called swim trunks? And when I was a kid, I just called it my “swimsuit”. Actually I called it a bathing suit, but that doesn’t make much sense either since I don’t bathe in them. Anyhoo…a month or so ago I noticed two spots wearing through in the front. And when I would take the jammers off I could see there was a line wearing through right down the middle of the back of them. Over the past few weeks, I figured out that the two spots in the front were being cause by me grabbing my swimsuit by pinching the material and pulling it away from my skin when I would get out of the pool. I guess I was trying to make them a little less form fitting. It just became a habit I had never thought about until those spots appeared.
But I certainly wasn’t grabbing the back of my trunks, so I figured it must just be my cheeks or something rubbing together (sorry for the imagery) and rubbing part of the material off. The problem was, I couldn’t figure out whether it was see through or not while wearing them. I would look at the two spots and I could sort of see my legs through them, but I wasn’t sure anyone else could. And I would stand in front of a mirror and look at my behind with the trunks on, but I still couldn’t tell what other people could see. So I went on wearing them.
I kept forgetting to try the jammers on at home so my wife could tell me if they were see-through in the back, and whenever I thought about it I was at the gym, and I couldn’t exactly ask a stranger for help. “Hey, would you check out my behind and tell me if my swimsuit is see-through in the back?” would probably result in me getting my membership revoked, and maybe a new membership on a public database somewhere.
So finally last night I remember and had my wife take a look. “Yep, totally see-through” was the diagnosis. Now the only question is how many people have seen me getting in and out of the pool at the gym and have said “Oh my goodness…does that guy really have a 4-inch wide clear stripe going down the back of his swimsuit?” I guess it’s a good thing I’ve got those waterproof headphones so I wasn’t able to hear anything.

For the first time, we’re really pleased to say that Ron Hill MBE is attending this Marathon training camp at Club La Santa. It’s great news, as Ron is one of the true masters of marathon running, so this is your chance to learn from one of the true greats of our time.
With both marathon and distance running have been increasing in popularity in recent years, this camp gives you the opportunity to sample the challenging terrain of the volcanic island of Lanzarote.
There will also be lectures and at the end of the week, we will have a dinner in the restaurant, La Casa, where companions can join us by paying 24€ for a 3 course meal and a half bottle of wine.
